Book 9 of the collected sermons of Rev. Samuel Phillips, first minister of the 2nd Congregational Church (South Parish) at Andover, Mass., 1743-70. Pages are numbered from 1-1204 in 46 gatherings (with gaps). Each sermon lists dates and locations. Includes Election Day sermon of 1748 and a sermon given at the 1751 installment of Rev. Samuel Chandler of Gloucester. Collection also contains undated notes on sermons given by Mr. Noise [sic] and John Higginson, sermon notes from 1705-14 by Mr. Willard and Ebenezer Pemberton, other unidentified sermons, and a diary page (1706).

Samuel Chandler (1713-1775) of Gloucester, Mass. was a clergyman who in 1755 was chaplain of a regiment commanded by Col. Ichabod Plaisted (1700-1762) of Salem, Mass. John Higginson (1616-1708) was the son of noted clergyman, Francis Higginson (1586-1630), who brought his family from Claybrook, Leicestershire, England to New England in 1629. Although the younger Higginson seems never to have been ordained, he was appointed to several ministerial positions: Chaplain at Saybrook Fort, Conn., 1636-1639; Asst.
